Acontece com toda banda importante depois de conceber uma obra-prima: como fazer para suprir as expectativas de um novo trabalho? Terrível a angústia gerada pelo desejo de não decepcionar o público, a crítica especializada e, porque não, a si próprios. Aconteceu com o Nirvana depois de Nevermind, Radiohead depois de Ok Computer, Mercury Rev, depois de Deserter's Songs. Agora chegou a vez dos Flaming Lips. A especulação não é pequena.

Recapitulemos:

Corria o ano de 1999 e o mundo pop andava as voltas para incensar um "novo Ok Computer" - um ano antes, o eleito tinha sido o já referido Deserter's Songs do Mercury Rev, banda irmã dos Lips (ambas de Oklahoma City) – e eis que o grupo publica o seu The Soft Bulletin, eleito o álbum do ano em muitas publicações.O Flaming Lips deixava de ser apenas um outsider e passava à redenção, sendo celebrado em quase todos os veículos de cultura pop. E todos os elogios eram merecidos: o disco repleto de melodia, senso pop e muita criatividade, fiel ao estilo "nosense" do grupo - que sempre preferiu uma boa piada à violência. The Soft Bulletin conclamava uma revolução pictórica reproduzida também nas bem sucedidas e catárticas apresentações da banda.

Agora a banda lança Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots e antes que apareça a inevitável pergunta, eu respondo: sim o Flaming Lips conseguiram fazer outro grande disco, nada inferior ao "Soft Bulletin". Grande na concepção, na delicadeza das melodias e, sobretudo, na dinâmica das canções, mais psicodélicas e atmosféricas que as do disco anterior. As letras continuam poéticas, tragicômicas e insólitas. Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots analisa profundamente dilemas e problemas existenciais motivados pela perda recente de uma amiga de Osaka, Japão e de uma historinha com enredo bem peculiar: a garota Yoshimi deverá combater os temíveis robôs cor-de-rosa. Dura lição para a mocinha que se conflita entre o matar e o morrer escolhendo, obviamente, a primeira alternativa.

O estranho nome do álbum é, na verdade, uma homenagem a uma garota chamada Yoshimi P-we, baterista dos Boredoms e da Free Kitten (de Kim Gordon, do Sonic Youth). Ela faz os vocais (gritos, na verdade) da faixa Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robs p. 2 e é amiga de longa data dos Lips. Yoshimi aposta na sonoridade ambient já utilizada pelo grupo em Sundelly Everything Has Changed e Feeling Yourself Desintegrate, ambas do disco anterior. O grupo optou por batidas eletrônicas e intervenções de violão e teclados, o que deu muito espaço para as habilidades de Steven Drodz, multi-instrumentista do grupo. O álbum está sendo lançado hoje, 16 de julho, nos Estados Unidos. Chegou ontem às prateleiras européias e provavelmente nunca aterrise em lojas brasileiras como lançamento nacional. Se você quer conhecer faixa a faixa um dos prováveis concorrentes a melhor álbum de 2002, aventure-se. "O teste começa agora".

Uma voz grave anuncia: "O teste começa agora". O público que veio assistir ao combate está afoito querendo a luta. Uma base dançante com violão, bateria e baixo permite Coyne dissertar sobre os efeitos e conseqüências de uma luta, de um combate. No final a voz grave retorna para anunciar:
"o teste acaba agora".

One More Robot/Sympathy 3000-21

Hipnótica. Um riff de baixo sedutor aliado a uma batida climática e harmonias vocais. A letra fala de um robô que "aprendeu a ser muito mais que uma máquina". O robô é programado para destruir seus oponentes nos combates. Mas o modelo deste é único, trata-se de um 3000-21, que possui um circuito que possibilita reação às emoções sintéticas.

Apresentação da heroína Yoshimi, faixa preta em caratê, pronta para destruir os robôs malvados que ameaçam as pessoas de sua cidade. Os robôs estão prontos para atacar. Mas o cantor está confiante na habilidade de Yoshimi para destruí-los, pois segundo ele "será trágico se os robôs malvados vencerem". A canção tem violões, percussão eletrônica, teclados – diálogos percorrem toda a melodia e finaliza com um ruído que continua no início da faixa seguinte.

A luta propriamente dita. Estrutura um pouco eletro-jazzística, não há vocais, somente sons de uma platéia alvoroçada, ávida do combate. Muitas interjeições, gritos dos combatentes. E finalmente a vitória de Yoshimi contra os terríveis robôs cor-de-rosa.

In The Morning Of The Magicians

Melodia deslumbrante, bateria e teclados climáticos para versos que avaliam as dimensões do amor e seus conceitos ("O que é amor? O que é ódio?"), questiona a veracidade desse sentimento. Talvez a faixa mais bela do disco.

Ego Tripping At The Gates Of Hell

Outro grande momento do disco. Baixo pulsante e sopros delicados. A letra fala sobre momentos raros de felicidade em que estamos ausentes: "Esperei você me amar / mas seu amor nunca veio", isso porque estamos absorvidos demais com nosso ego.

Are You A Hypnotist??

Lindíssima. Lembra algumas faixas do Soft Bulletin. A bateria trip hop incessante, o onipresente teclado e a voz plácida de Coyne garantem momentos de transe e tem o poder de elevar o ouvinte aos espaços celestes. O vocalista pergunta qual o mistério de uma pessoa que sempre o trapaceia, seduzindo-o constantemente, como se fosse um hipnotzador.

It's Summertime - Throbbing Orange Pallbearers

Inicia-se com um groove de baixo dando espaço a dedilhados de guitarra e base de violão. Melancólica, a canção é uma homenagem a uma amiga falecida na primavera de 2000, e o verão do título da canção é um encorajamento para as pessoas que a conheceram. Afinal, o milagre cósmico da vida continua em suas infinitas estações.

Do You Realize?

Primeiro single do álbum. Canção comovente que remete a composições de Lennon (Mind Games, por exemplo). A letra é um libelo humanista em que Coyne indaga ao ouvinte se ele percebe a grandeza do universo e a precariedade da vida humana: "Você percebe que possui o rosto mais bonito? / Você percebe que estamos flutuando no espaço? / Você percebe que a felicidade o faz gritar? / Consegue imaginar que todas as pessoas que você conhece um dia morrerão? / E em vez de você dizer adeus / deixe-os saberem que você compreende que a vida é breve / é difícil fazer as coisas boas durarem/ e que percebe que o sol nunca se põe / que é só uma ilusão causada pela terra que gira ao seu redor".

All We Have Is Now

A essa altura o ouvinte constata que o álbum tematiza a fugacidade da vida, e tudo que temos é o presente, o agora.

Instrumental. O ouvinte fica livre para refletir um pouco mais sobre as idéias contidas nas letras do álbum, enquanto a harmonia dos trompetes serve de trilha sonora para seus devaneios. Final perfeito.
